Email on the weekend?

Why is it you never hear anyone say “Thank goodness it’s Monday”? Let’s face it… if you are anything like me, your weekends are a commodity. After a busy week of work the only thing on my mind is changing the channel from “email” to the smooth tunes of weekend fun! I don’t even plan on checking my Facebook inbox over the weekend! Just looking forward to a fun night out with good friends – as long as there is no discussion of email – I am good to go!
So this past Saturday, I was out on the town with some friends to catch a gig with the Robbie Ducey Band. This band’s rockin’ blues style can shake up any audience with their soulful vocals and guitar riffs and make a music lover like me just want to crank it up! I’m there groovin’ and having so much fun, and I’m thinking, ‘what could be better than this’? That is….until the band’s bass guitar player Mark Jones steps over to chat with me. Then comes Murphy’s Law, the next thing I know Mark is all smiley faced and telling me all about how his band has connected with over 1 million fans through an email listserv. WTH?!? The nerve of him TALKING TO ME about email on MY weekend! Now I am thinking about how my company uses a listserv to get important information to customers about special offers and upgrades. Let’s face it: ListServs aren’t all bad (even though it did intrude upon my weekend fun!). Because of a listserv, Mark says his band sends email messages only to fans who have subscribed to the list so they never have to worry about spam. With its rockin’ roll fast delivery, RBD fans are up to date on important info such as new releases, tour schedule, newsletters, and announcements (BTW – a new RBD release is in the making). Mark says having a listserv is just one more cool-tool that keeps the band connected with their fans; and with over 1 million fans and growing, the music keeps playing!
As the band heated up again, my second glass of vino took effect and those email thoughts began to fade, I was happy to get back to the more immediate events of the evening such as sipping wine and socializing. But here it is again, Monday morning and I am back in the email saddle. But I am still thinking about the fun I had with my friends enjoying the music of the RDB. So, I guess there is a trade-off…I guess a little email can intrude upon my weekend as long as the memories of my weekend can occasionally take me away from the ole 9 to 5. <wink, wink>
